In a candid conversation with Sir Ian McKellen for the November issue of Gay Times, the star talks about his journey to self-acceptance while in the spotlight as one-quarter of British group Union J.

Union J were an English boy band, consisting of members JJ Hamblett, Jaymi Hensley, George Shelley (until his departure in March ) and Josh Cuthbert. I can appreciate the people I did have. On the one hand I do think it would have been a very different experience had I been able to be out during the whole experience, but looking back I know everything happened for a reason, and that was my journey.

I think this time round is what all of us really want to do. George: Yeah, for sure. It was kind of like the missing piece I think: back in the day we never spend enough time actually working on writing music and being musicians. {/INSERTKEYS}

A singer from boyband Union J has opened up about his sexuality to put an end to internet 'speculation' - but he doesn't want a label put on it.

Jaymi: I think the universe just aligned for us all where we had the pandemic to just work on our personal relationships without work or anyone being able to do any jobs, so that when everything started lifting we were all so eager to get back.

It was just insane, it was so busy, so hectic. I look back on the old days with great pride now, but it also makes me feel very tired!

It happened so quickly, Jaymi started talking to us individually and kept the conversations going and it just felt right. I picked up your old Attitude cover earlier. Ten years is a long time in pop music, even if it does seem like only yesterday that Union J were being propelled to fame on The X Factor in on a post-One Direction wave of renewed boyband hysteria.

And I think I speak for everyone on that. Last time it was so full-on that you just thought this would last forever. While his Union J bandmates are recreating scenes from David Attenborough documentaries over Ella Henderson, year-old Jaymi Hensley has revealed that he's gay and is in a long-term relationship.

George: Yeah, massively. Like Josh said it was just a whirlwind. George Shelley. I think the thing that we want to do this time round is not take everything for granted [and] actually live in the moment, enjoy it. We were put into a deal and a lot of our songs at that time were pre-written but as a group and four tones, sonically, we just blend together and I feel like for the first time ever we can appreciate that as a band.

I was able to talk to Jamie about things and although there was some crazy stuff going on I did have a good support bubble around me and I could be open with the boys. After finishing in fourth place, George Shelley, Jaymi Hensley, Josh Cuthbert and JJ Hamblett were promptly signed by Sony Music subsidiary RCA Records and released four Top 10 singles and two albums betweenwith magazine covers and merch deals flowing in abundance before the pop rollercoaster came to an all-too-abrupt end.
